WALKING THE WOODS (OPEN TO DANIEL)

Moving away from the others he nodded for Daniel to follow him.  They moved across the crunch of landscaped grass, past the glow of the electric lights of the house, and into the untrimmed and untamed lands that the packs used to hunt.  The plantation had swamps, but it also had miles and miles of running ground stretching out in front of them.  Ash could only imagine what this place had been like in the days when these fields were filled with subsistence crops to be picked by slave labor.  It reminded  him that sometimes change was a good thing.

"So, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Daniel had been correct in assuming that tonight was likely not a good night to solve whatever problem Daniel was facing, but they could at least open discussions about it.  There was nothing going on between Alex and Geller that Ash could be any help with so it was easy enough to focus his mind elsewhere.  With time you learned that dwelling on things you cannot change was a fruitless enterprise.  Walking beside the young man he shortened his stride so they stayed abreast of one another, and he listened to what Daniel had to say.

Daniels walk and posture screamed self confidence, but here he was walking with his Ulfric whom he hadn't really gotten to know yet and he was about to spill his guts to the guy on something that was bothering him personally. Really, the boy was something of a walking contradiction. "Well, the truth of it is, I am having some personal issues I was hoping you could help me with." He glanced over at Ash, but not daring look him in the face. He hadn't yet seen those boundaries with this Ulfric. "I am a bit lost in the world, I think. You see, before I came to New Orleans, before I left Japan, I enjoyed a lot more self control than what I am enjoying currently. By that I mean in respect to my other half." He spoke as if he and his beast had an intimate relationship, which they did, in a way. "I am beginning to think my lack of control stems from my having neglected my inner nature. I have been reclusive from my pack, I haven't felt worth from serving it, and I have no real place. I mean, could you look at me an tell me that if I were no longer here one day with the way I am with my fellow pack mates that you would think on me again?" He glanced off, and sighed. His confident posture wavered for just a moment, a sign of weakness of mind, as he contemplated his next statement. "Bluntly, I think I would benefit from you help regaining my control. I want to belong with you all. And I would like, I don't know quite how to put it, some worth to my pack. I am very good at solving problems with my hands. I've never really carried a gun or knife because I have never encountered a challenge I couldn't surpass without them. Besides, it would feel like cheating to me." He cracked a smile. "But really, my only other real talent other than violence has been driving. I am probably the best speeder you'll see under the age of thirty." Another cracked smile. He didn't dare laugh at his own jokes. Daniel simply focused on Ash, listening for any input the Leader Lukoi might have, or offers he might have.

As they walked along the avenues of the backwoods Ash listened to what Daniel had to say.  Around them the night was a beautiful symphony of natures song, a soothing mixture of life among the trees.  Passing an old oak tree Ash let the tips of his pale fingers graze the bark in silent recognition of the ancient tree here in their midst.  This was a peaceful place and not for the first time he was grateful for the perception of the beast in being able to commune so closely with such a place.

"Daniel.  I think from time to time about all the wolves who have come and gone from the pack over the years.  Power, control....those aren't the things that make someone memorable or important.  You seem to have your focus so drawn to one target that you miss the bigger picture."

This may have been the first time that he had talked to the boy, but it was not the sum total of what Ash knew of him.  He had been reported to about Daniel from other members of the pack and knew that this near obsession with his station was not a newly formed worry for the other man.

The comment about not having met a problem he couldn't solve with his hands and about guns being cheating made Ash realize how little the pup knew about his own Ulfric.  It also made him realize that the boys confidence was likely based on a rather narrow world view.  But that was likely a sign of his youth so Ash neither rankled at the comment nor tried to dissuade Daniel from his position on things.

"Interacting with your pack will give you more worth to them than a million tricks on a racetrack.  If you want to be more a part of the pack then get to know the wolves.  Each of them can teach you something if you let them."

"My focus is simply instinct I suppose. He, it...Myself, I suppose... It's like a constant nagging inside my body. I am looked at as if I am unworthy of most forms of respect because of my age, and my inner self becomes infuriated at the fact. It was never so annoying before I left Japan." The youthful wolf sent Ash a glance every now and again as they spoke, and he smiled as he heard the Ulfric speak. "I have decided to make my attempts. Some are going to be harder to approach than others, but I am going to try." He glanced down, and then back to the Ulfric. "In all honesty, the one thing I want most is my body back. Have you any idea how maddening it is, having almost everything you took pride in, at least in terms of accomplishments, taken away from you? This body of mine, the beast inside me, it all listened to my will. I could do as I pleased with this body, then Mai left. I decided to come here, to destroy the root cause of my suffering with my bare hands, and beat the last breath out of Mr. Sinclair. When I arrived, and found he had been dispatched, I don't know why but all of it ended. That first full moon was the first in almost two years that I felt maddening pain in a shift. This body doesn't obey me anymore, and it drives me crazy because I can't figure out why. Is it all in my head, or is it more? All I really want is myself back, and to really belong to someone or some people." He flinched. He had rambled, and felt like he would be paying for it shortly. He didn't know this Ulfric so well, maybe he would simply have a nice enlightening lecture, or a swift kick in the ass. Whatever came, he was readying himself for it.
