"haaaa.." the guttural whispering sound of laughter was covered up with her hand, then it banged into her retainer head gear and caused her entire head to go back and smack into the person behind her. That set off a series of happenings that would go down in history as the day Sarah Vasco caused the session of summer school to shut down for the day. She was going to be a Senior this year, so she needed the extra boost for college.

The kid behind her got knocked into a fire extinguisher, which fell off the wall and started spinning around spraying foam everywhere, banging into the legs of teenagers at their lockers breaking bones, and leaving behind a trail of bruises to be nursed for the next two weeks. Students screamed, teachers called for order, and how the trash can caught on fire was anybody's guess, but they couldn't contain it in time because the next fire extinguisher was in the next hall.

Green knee socks pulled up as high as they could possibly go, a blue and purple plaid skirt cocked wrong on her hips so that the front was at her side, and the zipper at the front. The white blouse and pink sweater a little too hot for this weather, but Sarah was too busy trying to hear the joke the jocks in front of her were telling. Scratching at her knee, pulling at her knee socks. The big ass sprayed bangs were arching up and over like a sideways pompadour, the back sloppily braided. Once she heard the joke and laughed, the rest was a blur.

Shoving her glasses up on her nose, she ran into several people trying to get out of the school. Nobody could ever link the accident to her, but they all knew it was pretty much Sarah's fault. All great disasters were. She walked home, back pack dragging, trying to keep the drool to a minimum and applying chapstick frequently, she felt like the biggest nerd in the world. She wasn't even cool enough to be a geek. She was a nerd. She lifted her head to look at her house, her entire head tipped back, eyes magnified ten times or better, like the bottom of glass coke bottles, and sighed. She didn't even need her glasses anymore, but she was afraid to take them off and let her parents know that she was suddenly....healed.

She was a wolf. A WOLF. Only for a couple of months. It was a long story and she hadn't told anybody. Cuz...come on. She had enough problems and disadvantages without telling her parents, 'oh yea and Ima wolf.' They would've freaked. The middle class, all American urbanites would have laid down and freaked out. The first few weeks, she was at summer camp and kept shifting without warning. The smells and sounds hurt her nose and ears. Too strong, too loud. But she finally got through that part, now she was just feeling useless. She didn't even want to go in the house. So she dumped her backpack on the porch, shoved her glasses back up, adjusted her headgear, and decided to walk.

-Maya wasn't a particularly joggy kind of person.  If she was going to take excercise she would always choose yoga or a dance class of some kind, but Geller had suggested running to let off steam.  Anything was worth a fucking shot.  So, in order to work through some shit in her own head Maya had taken her Lupe's advice.  Dressed in a simple pair of black running shorts with hot pink piping along the edges and a white wife beater with the straps of her hot pink sports bra peeking out underneath.-

-Her iPod was hooked to the waistband of her shorts at the small of her back, the hot pink chord of her earbuds running under her shirt so it wouldn't be swinging around behind her as she moved.  With each jogging stride Maya's ponytail bounced to and fro to the rythmn of her steps.  She couldn't help it! Even jogging she sort of looked like her body wanted to dance.  The sound of Nanci Griffith's voice was singing sweetly in her ears and already she was feeling cheered up.-

-Luckily it didn't take much.  Generally she was a pretty happy person.  Picking up her pace the beat of her black Nike's on the pavement took on a faster rhythm and she didn't even feel out of breath.  Sometimes being a lycan was fucking great! As she moved she could feel the tension in her body releasing, the stress she hadn't realized she'd been carrying all day seeping away.  That was the thing about the beast, it reacted to emotions and made them harder to deal with.  That was what Geller had been explaining and he had been right apparently, physical activity did help to work it out.-

-Not really paying attention to where she was going Maya came around a blind corner quickly and heard a loud 'Huuuu' sound over the music just as she slammed face first into another girl.  Now Maya was only about five feet tall so she pretty much got a face full of this strangers breasts before slipping on some spilled homework pages and stumbling backwards into a hedgerow.  Leaves and twigs scratched at her arms as her wide cerulean blue eyes looked at the girl she'd run into.-

"Ohmigod! Fuck! I'm so sorry.  Are you okay?"

-Jesus Christ Maya! She was really making too big a habit of slamming into people.  At least it meant she was meeting a lot of new people.  All at once her eyes narrowed and the tip of her little nose did a Bewitched type of twitch as she smelled the girl.  Almost at once her eyes widened again and she pushed away from the hedges to brush debris off herself.  Then she moved in closer to the girl sort of sniffing at her lightly as Maya's own blondey wolf came padding up those metaphysical lines to greet the other wolf.-

"Hey!"

-Leaning in she brushed her cheek against Sarah's and almost at once she realized her mistake.  Pulling back her beast brushed against the other girls and they both realized that Sarah was probably just past her first full moon.  So....shit...the girl probably thought Maya was some kind of creepy lesbo trying to hit on her.  Stepping away those bubble gum pink lips curled in a smile.-

"Uhmmm....you're...." -Looking around to make sure they were alone Maya looked back at Sarah.- "You know...." -And she made a small howling sound under her breath with a grin and a chuckle.- "How long?"

"unnnnnf!" She bounced off the little blonde and cracked her ass on the sidewalk, the papers fluttering to the ground around them like giant feathers. Her glasses were half up on her forehead, her mouth bleeding from biting down on impact. Blinking, she sucked in some air through her metal laden teeth, fumbled with her glasses and that was when she felt the brush to her cheek. Her little shaggy black wolf came trotting out pretty as you please, whimpering, turning in circles as if chasing its tail, then lopping around the blondey wolf with enthusiasm. A loyal follower, the little shaggy black panted a minute, then bounded left, then right in front of the blonde.

Sarah felt her insides quiver. Another wolf around made her all goosey and shaky. She whimpered a little, wiped the slobber from her chin, adjusted her headgear again, and then gave the goofiest grin anybody could ever hope to see when Maya howled all playful.

The laugh came again. That 'haaaaah' guttural hollowed out sound. "coupla months...how'd ya know?" The green knee socks were sliding down her calves, and without the grace God gave a goose, she clumsily got up from her sitting position, her skirt flipped up in the back showing pink flowered undies, and grinned again at Maya. She stuck out her hand.

"I'm Sarah...."

-Whoa! That laugh almost literally made Maya lean back with her cerulean eyes widening a bit.  It wasn't like any sound she'd ever heard before.  Still, when Sarah held out her hand Maya took it with a welcoming smile on those bubblegum pink lips.  Giving the hand a shake she stepped in close again and reached around Sarah to pull down at the hem of her skirt.  No good letting the whole neighborhood see those panties.-

"I'm Maya.  I live...just back that way, closer to the French Quarter.  What about you? You live around here?"

-Cerulean blue eyes surveyed the quiet suburban street.  It looked like a nice place to grow up.  Seeing some of Sarah's papers blowing away Maya hurried to grab them and help Sarah pick up her things.  At one point they reached for the same paper and bonked their heads together something furious but they laughed (frighteningly enough) and just rubbed their heads.-

"So...I mean...have you met the pack yet?"

-From the other end of the street where Sarah had come from a car came slowly cruising along.  Inside it looked like some football players in their letter jackets and a few happy girls.  Summertime, it was always exciting.  Maya had only graduated from high school a handful of years before so her memories of those days were still close and happy.  Sometimes she even tried on her cheerleading uniform alone in her room and danced around in it.  Good times.-

"Those friends of yours?" -She asked pointing towards the approaching car.-

Sarah pointed at a house about three structures down. It was painfully normal. Wide front porch, big ole windows, and a neatly clipped lawn. It was American apple pie, and everything that entailed.

"I live there, with m'parents." She screwed up her face in a look of 'omg! I live with my parents!' but hey, she was in high school. It was still allowed.

The head bonk had Sarah half dizzy, and her glasses skewed again, but habit of years was hard to break, so she put them back in place.

"what's a pack?" Obviously, brand spankin' new to all this, she wasn't even sure this was really happening. Sometimes in class, she dreamed of being kissed by the QB, and that seemed pretty real until half the class was laughing at her puckered lips and the teacher was screaming at her for being distracted. So this could be one of those times. She looked at the passing car, then back to Maya.

Maya looked like a real live Barbie Doll. Sarah had a mountain of a collection, so she ought to know. All Maya needed was a lil convertible and a Ken stuck in the passenger seat for the image to be complete. She gripped the sides of her skirt nervously, twisted the fabric, and before she could get out the words that they weren't friends of hers, the car load of football players and pretty girls began a litany of insults.

"HEEEY GEEK!"

"NERD BAIT!"

"HEY SARAH, KILLED ANYONE LATELY"

"QUEEN OF CLUMSY!"

The ensuing laughter filled the air, and Sarah's face went red hot, she pulled at her skirt, and adjusted her glasses looking down shaking her head.

"No, they're not m'friends.."

-Completely surprised by the screams and taunts as the vehicle drove by Maya reached for one of the items in Sarah's bag.  Grabbing the Hello Kitty pencil case in her hand she chucked it at one of the boys in the letter jackets.  Maya might not be much for sports but she had certain strength and accuracy due to lycanthropy that helped.  The pencil case arched high and smacked the boy in the back of the head as they were driving away.  When the car stopped and angry confused eyes turned their way Maya stood her ground like a tiny angry ray of sunshine.  One arm was held out, middle finger happily displayed.-

"FUCK OFF LOSERS!"

- Then she did something she hadn't done since high school.  She held her hand up to her forehead with her fingers in the shape of an L.  The car sped away but at least they'd stopped laughing.  Turning back to Sarah Maya's blonde ponytail flounced agitatedly.  A shrug of tanned shoulders was given in explanation for her outburst.-

"Boys are so stupid.  Sorry about your pencil case.  I'll buy you a new one." -Looking Sarah over Maya started walking with her towards the house that she had identified as her own. - "Well, a pack is a group of people like us.  They can help you get used to everything, and they can help with your parents, and just be there for you.  Plus it's kind of a have to thing, like as in, if you're a wolf you have to answer to the authority of the pack.  Thing of it like....the principals office but fuzzier and more fun."

-When they stopped in front of Sarah's house Maya looked at the other girl again and could almost taste the lonliness dripping off of her.  Asking for a piece of paper and a loose pen or something that had missed the attack of the Hello Kitty pencil case Maya put the paper against the side of the house and scribbled down her name and number.-

"It's almost the weekend.  When you're done with school just call me.  I can take you to meet the pack.  That way you don't have to go alone, or have them come looking for you....that could be awkward.  Maybe you could come sleep over or something."

-Handing Sarah back the piece of paper and pen Maya smiled sweetly.  Then she gave a little finger wave and a 'call me' before hopping back down the porch and continuing on her run.  She hoped Sarah would call, and come meet the Ulfric with her.  Maya could only imagine the awkwardness of having a pack member show up looking for you at school or around your parents.  That would so suck! Settling her earbuds back in she restarted her jog, but she wasn't frustrated now.  Instead she smiled happily and thought about this possible new friend.-
