Rounds - A Day at the Shifter Clinic (open)
Permalink

It was a quiet day in the clinic and Jessica had left her office to do rounds. Yes, she actually had a couple of patients to check on so that meant that she wasn't buried in her office all day.

The first patient was a young boy that had been bitten by a dog. The problem was that his mother insisted that it was a werewolf that had done it and it didn't really matter how much it was explained that her little boy was fine and wouldn't be getting furry once a month.

"How are we doing Jimmy?" A smile curling her lips as she stepped into the room, accepting the boy's chart from Carrie.

"He's terrible! He's in pain and he's going to change, I just no it!" Mrs. Parker was nearly hysterical, which she had been since she and Jimmy arrived the day before. "Moooom, I'm fine." Jimmy groaned, rolling his eyes. He was a typical 9 year old, last thing he wanted was to be babied.

"Mrs. Parker, I've had Jimmy's blood tested... again. There is absolutely no sign of any lycanthropy virus in his system." Her voice was consoling, smiling over at the boy, lashes dipping to give him a wink. "I promise, he is not infected." She moved to the side of the bed, snapping on a pair of latex gloves before easing the covers down. "Now Jimmy, I just want to check on this. Alright?" She carefully removed the bandage over Jimmy's side, examining the deep bites in his side, even leaning closer to take a delicate sniff. She straightened with a smile, stepping back and nodding to Carrie. "Go ahead and rebandage. There's no sign of infection and all of his tests are clear so it looks like Jimmy can head home." She tugged off her gloves, tossing them into the trash as Carrie began to rebandage the boy. She tugged a pen from the pocket of her lab coat and noted his chart before smiling at Mrs. Parker. "He'll be fine. Carrie will go over his home care with you. He'll be just fine."

"Alright, thank you Doctor. I just don't want him to become one of them." Mrs Parker suddenly flushed, realizing what she'd said and to who. "Oh.. I didn't mean that the way it sounded."

"Its alright Mrs. Parker. I understand." She smiled, lightly touching the womna's arm before direcitng another wink Jimmy's way. "You be good not Jimmy." And then she was out of the room, making her way down the hall to her next patient.

She took the chart from the holder outside the room before stepping inside. This was an easy visit, just make sure that everything was as it had been for weeks. She flipped through the chart, frowning again as she looked at the lack of information. The transfer forms still hadn't arrived. She had to contact the transit company to request them. For now he was just John Doe. All his vitals were stable, no obvious injuries, body scan was clear. She sighed softly, moving to the bed and examining the figure there. Her fingers drifted lightly over his features, questing power spilling over him as she closed her eyes on focus. The Great Cat was searching for the wolf inside of the sleeping figure, the wolf that that blood test stated had to be there but.... no one was home. She sighed again, pulling down the sheet covering him and ran the basic reflex tests with a small hammer, checked his eyes with a penlight and basically made sure that all was well. Poor John Doe. She had to get his paperwork here to notify his family.She carefully covered him again, lightly smoothing a hand over his cheek. "I don't know where you are but we'll find you and bring you home. Alright?"

She stepped from the room, notating his chart with the results of today's exam. "Hmm, maybe I should have Ash or Silent examine him, maybe they can call his wolf." She murmured the thought to herself as she slid his chart away, heading to the nurses' station to check for other patients, the thought drifting away without even a hint of memory.

It was a quiet day in the clinic, rounds completed easily, releasing Jimmy and checking on her lost soul. A good day to complete the never ending stack of paperwork. "Oh Carrie, don't forget to schedule Alex in for a follow-up visit. I don't want her forgetting." A smile to the nurse before she headed to her office, ready to get to work.

Bianca smiled at him, and he felt better for it, though he was not entirely certain as to why. He had done nothing to deserve it. The answer to the lycanthrope contagion still eluded him. It was only because of Ryver that he was now fully aware of the interactions of the virus with certain pairings of the different amino acids in a human DNA strand. He was still mystified by the process that changed the human DNA to that of select animals, especially where the human either had gained or had lost mass [a miracle not exclusive to biology, physicists were sure to be mystified as well.]

He returned his attention back to Bianca, realizing he had once again wandered in his thoughts. She was still sitting at his lab table, smiling. She was so beautiful when she smiled, and her scent was an intoxication of heady emotion to him.

"Why are you smiling, love?"

"Why Malcolm, dahling," she was teasing him again. She was always teasing him. "It's time for you to go. I've finally done all I can and now you are released." She stood then, swaying her hips as she approached him. He nervously licked at his lips as it was always dangerous when she neared him. A bemused expression crossed over his features, curious as to why he had to leave so soon.

"I only just arrived."

"Not true. You've been here for quite some time, and so have I, only you still think I'm a figment of your imagination." Before he could inquire further, she leaned over to give him a kiss, and he was no longer there.

                                                         ~~~~~
Those viridian hues revealed themselves once, twice, on the third time they remained open. It was very bright. The light hurt his eyes, and he was not certain as to why. Smells flooded his olfactory faculties, and he took in the scents. He was not in his room at the pack house, but in a hospital. In quarantine, so noted by the familiar plastic sheeting surrounding his bed, though this was the first time he was within the confines of the structure, and not looking in from without. Accordingly, his heart rate increased significantly as panic began to set in. What bloody hospital was he in, and why? And what the bloody hell had happened to him? And where the bloody hell was he?
He tried to sit up, collapsing back to the bed from weakness. His tongue was glued to the roof of his mouth, and his wolf began to panic then, began to claw it's way to the surface. They were both very groggy, and he was only just aware of the alarms that began to resound in the room.
Jessica hadn't been in her office for long before alarms started going off, having her rise from behind her desk to hurry back out onto the floor.
Carrie raced from the nurses station to John Doe's room, slapping the alarms as she looked at the man on the bed. "Easy sir. Relax. The doctor will be here in a moment." Carrie had been well trained by Jessica and she stayed calm, carefully watching the patient for any sign of shifting.
Jessica entered the room, eyes widening at the sight of the now alert man. Shields lowered enough to allow her own power, the Great Cat within her, to sweep over him in calming warmth. "Easy sir. Relax, deep breaths alright?" She moved to the bed, laying a hand lightly against his cheek, her voice an almost throaty purr. "You've been asleep quite a while."
She glanced back at Carrie, "Food. High protein, I think a shake to start and then maybe a burger." Food, especially protein was always good medicine for a shifter, replenishing the body after healing.
"-will be here in a moment."
Malcolm focused on the sound of the woman who was speaking, understanding meaning only in the latter half of her words through the panic. Trying to take deep breaths. Malcolm struggled fiercely against the urge to shift, trying to soothe his beast who was just as bewildered as he. She was speaking English, not Italian, with a hint of an accent. Before he could process the information further, he felt a great and soothing power wash over him and his beast.
"Easy sir. Relax, deep breaths alright?"  Virid hues turned to focus on the beautiful woman who had entered, a woman infected with a feline lycanthrope strain. She was powerful, and gave him just enough to help him with his own beast within. "You've been asleep quite a while."
He focused on her, taking in the shapely curve of her jaw and the dark shade of her hair. She turned from him then, telling the other woman with the hint of an accent to bring food. Just then his stomach roiled in protest, making him accutely aware of just how hungry he was, but he focused on her last words to him instead.
"Quite a while?" That clipped British accent came forth in a voice that nearly cracked, more from disuse than from nerves. He was too confused to be nervous at the moment. "How long is quite a while? Where is Ryver?" He paused a moment, and took another deep breath. "I apologize. My name is Dr. Malcolm Book, I should have introduced myself earlier. Perhaps you could inform me as to where I am Dr...?" Manners were especially important in times of duress. It showed that he was a gentleman even in his bewilderment.
She kept her hand on his cheek, lightly petting even as she kept the warm caress of her power around him, soothing the wolf within even as she spoke to keep the man calm. "McFarland, Jessica McFarland." Her expression serene, a soft smile touching her lips but within was a ripple of shock at his name. Malcolm Book... how had she not recognized him? She'd read his papers, studied his work and here he was in her clinic for.... weeks... and she didn't recognize him?
She gave his cheek another light touch before moving to the pitcher of ice chips always kept within the room to hydrate the comatos patient. Her fingers were deft as she used the long handled spoon to capture some chips and carry to Malcolm's lips. "Here, this will help with the hoarseness." She was trying to buy some time, to figure out what to say. She spooned a few chips into his mouth, urging him to let the ice melt.
"Please, let's get some food in you, make sure that everything is as it should be and then we'll discuss the details of how you got here and how long its been. Alright?" This was going to be difficult to explain, she just knew it.
The sensation of his tongue having been glued to the roof of his mouth only seemed to worsen when he had spoken. He made a slight face, and then looked at the woman in wonder as she introduced herself. Jessica McFarland. He knew of her very well, having read quite a few papers she'd written on procedures to be used with infected patients. He had no idea that such intellect could be paired with such beauty, and here she was offering her comfort to him. It was enough to send a blush creeping up his neck.
He gladly accepted her offer of the ice chips, letting them rest atop his tongue to saturate the 'mouth gunk' as Ryver had called it once, when they were children, that coated one's mouth when one slept breathing through their mouth. As he suckled the chips, his mind racing at the implications of everything that she was and was not saying. Quite a while was more than a couple of weeks, maybe even months. That would explain why he was in the capable hands of Dr. McFarland, as she was one of the foremost experts on lycan physiology in the world. He would have presented an unusual case to the Roman medical field, and they most as like would not have even wanted to deal with him. After having been in a coma for a week, if he had been the physician in charge, he would have shipped himself to her as well. Of course, Malcolm had no idea this had happened years ago, and he had first been shipped to Oxford, then New York, and finally to New Orleans.
The glued sensation lessened considerably after a few moments, and he gladly took in a few more chips. When she mentioned food, he nodded enthusiastically, and his beast within gave a wag of it's tail. From the way she was speaking, he knew he must have been in a coma for a few months. Bloody hell, that was time he would never retrieve. Little did he know, it was much longer than that...
Stamping down the anxiety over the hulk-mode shifting, Artemus paused before the entrance of the clinic and chewed on the inside of his cheek. Would they even still have anything from his rushed visit? Only way to find out would be asking. Then again he was also curious why police had yet to be involved. Usually that tended to happen when you showed up bleeding on someone's doorstep. Rushed to the hospital, a nurse calls police to come once the patient is stable and conscious, then questions to find the culprit. Mulling that over a bit he shrugged and moved through the automatic doors.
Either Dakota had said something to the nurses, or Jess had. Just one more mark in the 'WTF' column. If the place catered to Therianthropes then they'd double check that one to make sure there wasn't a rogue hunter in the area. All of these thoughts played through his head as he looked around for the nurses station to ask for his records if they were available yet.
"I'm sorry sir, without some form of identification, that information can't be released to you." the nurse at her station slowly ate at his composure with her nasally tone.
Clucking his tongue as fingers drum across the counter he finally released a tired sigh. This had been a long shot, but it seems he'd have to actually ask for the damn help he'd tried to avoid. Yes, she was his Nimir-Ra, but that didn't mean he wanted to fucking bother her at every turn. Woman had her own shit to deal with, he'd take care of his own. Least that was the hope filled plan. As it stood, the loner'd have to ask for a hand out. "Fine....could you page doctor Jessica McFarland? She was my attending physician that night."
"One second sir." Reaching over for the phone, she punched in the extension. Her nasally tone magnified through the hospital.
Rubbing the bridge of his nose, Artemus fought off the onset of a migraine.
The sound of her name being paged had Jessica moving from her office out to the admittance desk. She'd fetl Artemus' presence as she exited her office, a pulse of calm power directed his way even as she moved to where he stood.
"Is everything alright?" Her hand lifted to his cheek, brushing back a lock of his hair. The question was unnecessary, obviously he felt something was wrong but she needed him to talk to her, to let her in.
She was his doctor and she was also his Nimir-Ra, nothing he could ask of her would be asking too much. "Let's go to my office alright?" She linked an arm through his, gently guided him along the halls of the clinic.
Unfortunately that touch did little to help his migrain which was more from the nurse's voice than anything. Again she got the barest response to the touch before her arm linked with his. "Just trying to get copies of the medical stuff from my impromptu visit the other night." Still acclimating to being around others, it would be some time before he got completely comfortable again. On that other plane his beast roamed in an aggitated state with troubled thoughts akin to its human counterpart. Once again a glimpse at just how synergized both were. Artemus was in complete harmony with his inner animal.
However, he wasn't in the best of sorts this night and it showed as his shields lay in tatters. His own calming presence spreading out from him through the hospital. The pressure inconsistant like the flow of high tide. "Seems I have to get new identification cards, that'll be a hoot and half. Still figuring out how I got on Dakota's doorstep."
Her power wrapped around him, shoring up his tattered shields without a thought, carefully encasing him in her warmth. The Great Cat that was her other half buffetted lightly at the white beast, offering companionship and comfort.
"Was there a reason you needed your files? I mean, you are planning on staying in New Orleans aren't you?" It wasn't unusual for people to request copies of their medical files but usually that only happened if they were changing doctors. She gestured him into her office and to the couch that was against one wall.
"I'm sure that there will be no issues getting you replacement ID. Although normally any victims of attacks are brought to the attention of the police because of our natures... well, reporting is only done at the victims' request when there is a shifter involved. Did you want the authorities to investigate what happened?"
"Considering I went from Istanbul to being here in Nola? Doubt the locals'd be much help." He just shook his head as the beast conitnued to pace back and forth, only stopping when the other pretty much started saying 'sit still damnit'.
"I just wanted to see if anything unusual was found. Lot happened that night I need to figure out. As to staying...reall don't know. My daughter i-" He cut off abruptly with a shake of his head. "Doesn't matter. People get hurt if I leave, they get hurt if I stay. What I want doesn't matter. Though she motioned him to sit, Artemus kept a slow pace back and forth in his tattered shorts and shirt, evidence he'd shifted recently.
That she was plugging up the cracks in his levy didn't even register until he felt pieces of the tide coming back at him from that foreign barrier. Blinking he looked at her and actually smiled for the first time since waking up to find her there beside him with Kota. Then his mind knee jerked back to where his daughter yet remained on the other side of the world.
With it came another pulse of anger, cloth stretching as white fur grew, nose flattened into muzzle and nails sharpened and flexed. In the exhale of breath he was back to regular human looking Artemus. Turning to look at the good doctor, he tilted his head to the side. "I got a world of problems, Jessica."
She moved to the desk, allowing him to pace, knowing just how much the pacing soothed sometimes, venting the nervous energy. Her fingers danced over the keyboard bringing up his file and frowning slightly at the results. There had been a lot going on or else she would have followed up a bit more on this.
Her head lifted when he mentioned a daughter, brows lifting. "I didn't know you had family. You should definitely reach out to them, let them know that you're well." She watched as he began to shfit, half rising from the desk even as her power wrapped more tightly around him, giving him the chance to relax before she attempted to force him back fully into skin.
"The way to deal with a world of problems is to start with one at a time." Something she was constantly remidning herself. "The only unusual thing was in the.. projectile, I suppose, that was found within you. It seems to be what was preventing you from healing correctly. Once it was removed you seemed to recover without problem."
"Show me." The two words somewhere between a request and a demand as his head snapped up and looked at her from the thoughtful pacing. Eyes blinking at the sudden snaring of power as he looked around.
"I just shifted didn't I?" He'd been completely oblivious to the hulk-mode shift. Mentally he berrated himself as that made twice in one night. "Sorry..." whether to his tone or the uncontrolled changing wasn't clear.
Brows arched slightly at his tone, holding his gaze until he looked away. "I'm already having it sent here to my office."
She nodded at his words, hand lifting to wave of his apology "Yes, you began to shift. I thought it would be best if you didn't but you managed to settle yourself on your own."
It didn't take long before there was a knock on the door, an orderly stepping into the room with the small specimen vial holding the silver laced bit of stone that had been within one of his wounds. "Thank you Darren." She accepted the little jar with a nod before turning to offer it to Artemus.
"I hope this will help."
"Lady, I didn't even know I was doing it. This comes like breathing to me right now." eyes follow the knock then the exchange as he focused onthat little bottle. As she offered it out, he snatched the contaner and twisted the cap to roll the stone in his hand. Not even reacting to the silver lines.
"Bastards..." All he said before holding it up to the light and ignoring the slight burn. "Well that explains getting cut off from my beast." Growling low he put the stone back in the bottle and handed it to her.
"Obsidian can sever mystical connections. Like the ultimate shield lock. Depends on which source you want to believe. Jury's still out on jade." He kept going just answering the questions before they were asked to save time. "And Jessica, I've been a therianthrope for ten years, if I can't control the other half of me by now, it'll never happen.
She was accepting a lot from him due to his current levels of stress, things like him just snatching the offered specimen jar from her but he was starting to wear on her nerves just a bit, her eyes narrowing at him as he examined the little bit of obsidian.
"So in other words, someone has done this to you on purpose. I suppose the next thing to discuss is who are your enemies, so we can deal with them." Yes, there was a definite emphasis on the word 'we'.
"And I don't care when you were infected, trauma can have all sorts of reprecussions. Its entirely possible that whatever was done to you has caused a regression of your skills and all it will take is relearning all those things you learned years ago."
"We don't have enough muscle for that." His tone flat, honest, but laced with fear at going up against what had put the silver to him. Artemus met her eyes and bore into them with a defensive pride.
Exhaling heavily he finally took that offered seat on the couch and looked at the palms of his hands where they rested atop his knees. He wasn't a person used to following orders or hell following in general. Was always either alone or leading the charge. "Seems there's some adjusting on both ends of this field. But I'm not up for discussing what did this. If they wanted me dead, I'd be dead." Every word was filled with truth as he continued to watch his hands.
"I know you don't give two squirts, but you said to protect those weaker, and listen to you. Well then, I'd be doin just that if I left and went right back to the hole they kept me in for the past year. They all ready drank most of my power, might as well let them finish the job." The last completely muttered with bitter hate. Snapping out of that path he started to get up. "Sorry to bring shit you don't need to your door step. I'll be gone in a few days."
Alright, she had enough of his attitude. "Why don't you let me make that decision?" Yes, they weren't exactly what she would call a strong Pard in terms of warrior skills but that didn't mean she was just going to roll over and ignore when one of her own were attacked. Regardless of what Milo had said about alliances she was fairly secure that she would be able to call for aid from the Rats and Wolves if she needed it but formalizing ties was a definite priority now.
Her eyes flashed a brighter gold as she met his, settling into the complete stillness of a huntress waiting for prey as he finally decided to take the seat she'd originally offered him. She would have rolled her eyes at him when he pulled his whole 'I'll leave to protect everyone' routine. Moving with surprising speed she was before him on the couch, hand lifted to cuff at the side of his head as he rose, much in the way a mother cat would censure a kit, enough of a blow to catch him off balance and set his ass back onto the couch.
"Nice. So instead of doing something about this you'll run. Leave your spore on Dakota's door so they'll come here first but you'll be gone." The words spit from her lips in a snarl. "I'm not buying this. You used to lead and you don't want to follow. Fine. I get that but this poor me routine is disgusting. I had hoped to be able to rely on you, for you to be the one for the others to look to, to help them grow. Instead I get this..." Her hand gestured at him. "If you know who's hunting you I want to know, and know now. Whether you go or stay I have people to protect."
