The news about Dade has shocked Tommy quite frankly. He had known that after the disaster in Hawaii Knox had been sent to California to look after the older rat, but the fact that Dade would no longer be there was still hard to imagine. That was the explanation for Tommy's reletive silence during the unfolding events earlier. After Milo and Knox disappeared into the swamps Tommy showered and changed clothes and by the time he came out to the living room most everyone had gone to bed or simply left.
Cornflower blue eyes looked at the destruction of the house and he chewed at the ridiculously full blossom of his lower lip as he tried to imagine Ashes reaction to this. Nothing he imagined was very good. Running his fingers back through his hair he moved across the kitchen/dining area and towards the back door where Milo and Knox had lept over the railing. Seeing Jessie sitting there keeping watch he smiled shyly to her.
"Mind if I join you?" They had hardly said hello yet, not surprising since Jessie had come home to complete chaos. Pulling a deck chair over Tommy dropped into it with that same silken grace and let his legs curl under him Indian style, his face shadowed by the veil of his long hair. Innocent eyes stared out into the darkness of the swamps and he looked back at Jessie. "You know, they might be gone a few days?"
Jessie was a lot like her mother actually. He saw it in that moment in the set of her lips, the look on her face, and the way she let him know she wasn't moving. With a sigh Tommy settled back into the deck chair. "I'll wait with you then."
If Knox could be there for Milo then Tommy could very well keep Jessie company. Time passed. Night became day, day became night again, and when necessary he brought her food, drinks, or her phone. He did it all without complaint as well as telling her what had been happening in New York since she left. He filled her in on all Simone's antics, what Marina had been busy with, and just generally tried to engage her mind so she wouldn't worry so much about Milo. Tommy knew that eventually the King would return.
Jessica stood at the railing at the edge of the deck watching the swamp where Milo and Knox had gone, her face a serence mask to all that didn't know her, concealing the turmoil beneath. She understood why he left, understood it probably better then most but it was still hard, painfully hard, knowing that she wasn't able to comfort him.
Her hands smoothed over the cane she still held, caressing the wood slowly as she heard the house become quiet behind her, finally moving from her sentinal's post to curl into one of the chairs on the deck.
Having Tommy join her on the deck loosened a little something of the knot of pain inside, let the restless wandering of her hands still their movements. For the longest time they just sat in silence. It was when her phone rang inside the house that broke the ice.
He retrieved the phone for her without a word and she stared at it a moment before answering softly. It was nothing, just one of those calls from the hospital she received asking for a file or a quick consultation, something she responded briskly before ending the call. The soft conversation had shattered the silence though. She asked about her mother, about Simone, even managed a a ghost of a smile when he told her of some of the antics still occuring in Bensonhurst.
-Milo had needed time to think, to drink, and to process what had just happened. He and Knox took that time together. The day and a half they were gone passed quickly and by the end of it he felt hollowed out. Not in a way that seemed weak, but the kind of reconfiguring that helps a man figure out that he wants more than what he has. Wants to be more than what he is. Perhaps in death Dade had gotten a message across that he'd been trying to teach Milo all his life. You never knew when the ride would be over, so enjoy it, but also make it worth the price of admission.-
-Things had been the same for a long time. Not that it had been bad, but the time for changes had descended on him like a brick to the head. Sometimes it took something that blunt to get Milo to even notice that things were happening. By the time he and Knox returned from their journey through the swamps they both looked worse for wear. No use lying, there'd been some fighting between them, a lot of drinking, and in the end they just wore their damn tongues out talking. One at a time they climbed the rails towards the porch of the house and hauled themselves over the top rail waking up Tommy and Jessie who had fallen asleep in their chairs.-
"Morning babe." -He looked towards the horizon where the darkness was just lightening.- "Almost."
-They both stank of swamp water and were dripping all over the place. Milo stripped off his clothes and shook off like a dog. When Tommy brought him a towel he rubbed it all over his skin making the goosebumps calm down a bit. Then he laughed and growled as Tommy turned the hose on him and Knox, the two naked men doused in a stream of cold water that washed away the smells and decay of the swamp from their bodies. More towels, more cleaning, and finally they were suitable for companionship.-
-Milo wrapped Jessie up in his arms, hugged her and lifted her off her feet with a long sigh.- "Tonight sucked. Let's sleep it off. We'll talk about it later."
-It was a promise of sorts, or as close to one as Milo could get. Right now though after almost three days without sleep he needed a bed and the arms of his people and his lady. Dade's message wouldn't be dispersed by a few hours of sleep. His voice wouldn't be silenced. So Milo led the others into one of the bedrooms where they could pile in together and blessedly sleep for at least a little while.-
The soft conversation with Tommy had slowly petered into silence as exhaustion took them both. Jessica had slipped into catnaps, eyes slitting open with every splash of water only to close again when her sight revealed nothing but the endless darkness of the swamp. Milo's approach to the house had her eyes slitting open again, golden hues gleaming in the darkness. The knot of tension eased from her chest as he climbed over the railing.
"Hey." She rose from her chair, supple as a cat no sign that she'd been curled in a deck chair for hours. She started to approach him before stilling, nose wrinkling. "Baby.. you stink...bad." Tender teasing, holding back until Tommy hosed them down. She stepped into the house as Tommy worked the hose over the pair of swampy rats, recalling Knox's words and stashing the cane away in the depths of her closet, giving it one last caress. She gathered more towels, sighing as she climbed over some of the debris still left of the liviing room before gathering more towels to bring outside.
She waited, patiently, as they cleaned off the last slime of the swamp and then she was there in his arms, her own wrapping tightly around him. "Tonight sucked," she agreed, her words mumbled against the skin of his neck, "But you're home now."
Once in the bedroom she slipped from her clothes and into the bed, curling herself tightly against him, nestled in the long length of his frame. It wasn't until he finally relaxed into sleep that she'd let herself finally rest.
