Katey was much happier these days. Despite still being a bit tense over trusting someone outside her family with the existence of her particular brand of strangeness, her nerves weren't strung quite so tightly. Her baby had arrived on schedule without a single scratch, just as promised. Instead of translating the book James had lent her for hours on end, she'd spent four hours out on the motorcycle. True, some of that was to get her to client meetings, but for the most part she was simply reveling in the fact she no longer needed a cab or her own two feet to get her places. This was as it should be.
The only thing marring the peace brought on by the purr and speed of the bike was the knowledge that she was going to have to find a temporary home. The hotel suite had been fine to begin with, but since it looked like she was going to be here for longer than planned...
But today, she was headed back to A Real Page Turner with a speed that probably should have brought the cops after her. Luckily she reached the shop without a problem and quickly parked the bike. It took only seconds to retrieve the two books and the single notepad she'd brought with her. With all of that in hand, her bike locked, she headed inside.
Once out of the brighter sunlight, dark driving glasses were shoved up on top of her head. Unfortunately, this left her momentarily blind, so she didn't bother looking for James. She merely let her voice do it. "Hey James, I ran into a snag with the translation." Now, if that didn't bring Mr. Wizard out, she didn't know what would.
Alastrina was in one of the aisle placing book on the shelves. When she heard the motorcycle and then the engine dying with a shrug of her shoulders she when back to placing books away. That was when she heard a woman voice. Hearing her say something about translation she peeked her head around the shelves. Short blonde hair was pulled back away from her face. And piercing blue eyes looked over the women. Before speaking herself.
" Hello. If your looking for James he is in the back getting more books for me. If you want I can go get him for you? "
Pushing herself off the ground of the floor to stand she was wearing light blue jeans with tears long her legs. Her black tank top was torn some also and it had the sex pistols scribbled across the front of it. Her feet were bare this fine day waiting for the lady answer.
Katey expected to hear the now familiar male voice, but instead was greeted with the sound of a female. Dark eyes blinked until the blonde came into focus, a blank expression on her face. When her brain finally supplied her with the memory of James saying he had a female apprentice she plastered her best professional smile on her face. It wasn't so much that she viewed the blonde as a threat, but she was naturally cautious about trusting anyone too much. Especially when she'd just met them. Hell, she didn't even know the girl's name.
"Ah.. yeah. If you could just tell him that Katey's here to see him that would be great. I can wait until he's done with getting those books for you." A glance around the room, then she focused on the blonde again. "I'll just have a seat over here until he's free." Hand waved toward one of the chairs. In fact it was the same one she'd sat in that afternoon when she'd let the wizard in on her secret.
Heading over to the chair, she set her stuff down and unzipped the leather jacket to get a little more air. After sitting, one booted foot came to rest on the opposite knee, a pleasant air of patient waiting about her. Sure, inwardly she was wondering if James had told this girl anything about her, but she wasn't going to show any worry. Hide your emotions until it was clear that you wouldn't be betrayed, that was her motto.
" Alright...I'll go get him. " Looking toward the chair off to the side where she was waving too. Giving her head a nod as she turned on her heels as she disappeared within the back before a yell was give from Alastrina. " HEY JAMES ! THERE IS A YOUNG LADY NAME KATEY HERE TO SEE YOU !! " Then after a few moments passed before the she would come back out.
" He should be only a few more minutes .. " She would make her way back to the pile of books on the floor which she had been sitting next to. Placing herself back on her rear as she slide books back onto the shelves. Before speaking over to the women. " So you ride a motorcycle ? "
James had gone upstairs in his book gettings for Trina. when he heared the young blonde shouting out for him. he stepped out onto the railing of the upstairs loft section and started to shout.
"Thank you Trina! you know I 'm not really so old that you need to shout!" he said that with a good humour in his tone. and then offered a smile down to Katey and gave her a wave. and in a fit of absolute male ego driven childishness he tossed one leg over the railing and pushed from the second story balcony and landed on a chair, stumbled and rolled tot he floor. bounding up somewhat quickly with a charming smile." Sorry about that. Trina, your books are on a side table upstairs... be a dear and go fetch them... and then get started reading them."
there was a nod to the young lady before he turned his attention to Katey." Katey! Hello... I see you've met my lovely apprentice Alastrina..." hooking a thumb up stairs." That worked out much better the last time i tried it." he started towards her chair and plopped down into the closest one. He hadn't told Trina anything about Katey at all, it wasn't his place to share someone else's secrets." to what do I own this very good pleasure?" he was dressed business casual, as he always was while at work.
Katey fought back a laugh as the blonde proceeded to yell for James. That was certainly one way to get someone's attention. She should know, since she used that method almost every time she went to her sister's place. Head shook a little, fingers quickly running through the dark tresses and adding to the touseled appearance. No, she hadn't worn a helmet. And screw those pesky laws about things like that. They had to catch her before they could give her a ticket.
Lips curled upward in a slight smile as she looked over toward the blonde again. "Mhmm. Best way to travel, if you ask me." Hand lifted, thumb directed behind her toward the street. "That one there is my baby.. a Kawasaki Ninja."
About then she heard James' voice and looked up to spot him at the railing of the loft area. Both brows lifted as she watched him do his tumbling routine, a smile hovering at her lips. "Nice save." A chuckle escaped then as he plopped into a nearby chair. Dark gaze turned from James back to Trina, giving a slightly warmer smile and a nod. "Pleasure to meet you, Alastrina."
Leaning over, she lifted the books and notebook, waving them a little. One of the books was carefully tossed in his direction. "Since I was coming by, figured I'd bring that one back and you can find me more like it." That one happened to be the one dealing with meditation. "But the main thing, was this..." Sitting forward, she opened the book in Latin at the place marked by one of his business cards. "Either I'm reading this wrong, or there's something wrong with my translations because it doesn't make any sense." Turning it so that he could easily read it, a finger tapped the page by the passage that had her stumped.
Up until that point, she'd had no trouble following where the wizard who had written it was going with his theory about deities just being men and women with special abilities, or perhaps being supernatural beings. Really, she thought the theory was as good as any other currently in existence. At least, it was getting her to do more research on any deity or hero from mythology that was ever said to use lightning.
" Well that's really cool. I always wanted to ride on one. But my mother had always said they were death bikes..and all that junk. " Trina would slide the last book within the shelves. Before she would look up to James . " Well you know with age you started to loose your hearing . I was just making sure that you can still hear ? " Trina would nod to the women " Pleasure to meet you to Katey.." Trina would hold her breath as James try to be a young stud and jump from the balcony. " Alright if you break a hip or something I'm not taking care of you "
Once James didn't hurt himself she would shake her head before she made her way up the steps to the loft to get the book she needed to read. Grabbing them up she moved toward a couch which was up there to get started on her reading. Leaving the two downstairs so they could talk .
James took the book and opened the cover to look at the fist page. and then he gave a nod." oh, this one! brilliant. he said that with a smile and plopped the book down onto a side table, relaxing into the chair and crossing his legs at the ankles, looking absolutely comfortable." The problem was that I hadn't calculated on how bouncy the cushion was. I hadn't landed my weight correctly. but I'd say I compensated properly..." and then he glanced up to Trina smiling when she dissappreared upstairs.
"Brilliant girl that one, if not a bit mouthy..." James could do any physical feat of acrobatics provided he did the proper math ont he situation. hell he could dodge bullets if he knew they where coming he totes was the young stud. when she mentioned the translation he held his hand out to take the book, and read over the page, a couple of times."Hm, it is odd... It's an interesting story... It's written in Roman. which was latin, but slightly different.. and this was a translation from that into modern latin... " he bookmarked the page again and closed the book setting it to the side as well.
"I've got some comparative texts that I can look at and try to get you a better translation. shouldn't be too terribly difficult." he smiled a small smile then before he glanced over his shoulder at the counter" I've got a few translations at my desk back there, I'll make sure you get them before you go."
"How have you been aside from all your research?" he paused for a moment and gave his hand a wave. "Nix" he said. and suddenly they where surrounded in absolute silence. Alastrina was his apprentice yes, but she didnt know what Katey could do and it wasn't his place to tell her. and within their direct area she couldn't hear them just as they could hear absolutely nothing else. "have you been practicing?"
Katey made a face at the comment about Trina's mother considering motorcycles to be death machines. Why everyone thought that, she didn't know. If you knew what you were doing, there wasn't as big a risk. Not that it was ever perfectly safe to ride a motorcycle, she would never claim that, but so far she'd never wrecked a bike. Cars, on the other hand, didn't last long in her possession.
All of this was running through her head as the apprentice mouthed off to the wizard. Just for that, the attitude Alastrina had, she liked the girl. But the blonde girl had disappeared upstairs and James was telling her that he hadn't calculated correctly on his landing, which was why there'd been a little problem. Lips twitched and she gave a slight nod.
She sighed with relief when he said he could try to get her a better translation. Why she'd been worried he wouldn't know what to make of it, she didn't know. Maybe it was just that there'd been so little success in her previous lines of research. "Oh. Excellent."
A brow lifted at his hand wave and muttered word, but with a slight shrug she went on to answer. "Aside from the research and working around demanding clients, I've been all right." A slight grimace at the question of whether she'd been practicing. "Well... I was trying to practice... I don't think I should do that again at the hotel." A shrug. "Shorting out the whole building's electronics wasn't the plan. Think I'll wait until I rent a house around here before I try again."
Once getting the books which James had place on the table in the loft she would walk over to them as she looked over the titles giving a groan before picking them up. Carrying them over to the couch sitting them down next to it before stretching out over the couch. Then pulling the first book up on to the couch in front of her . Slender hand would flip the book open to the title page then the next one to began her long reading/study what she needed too.
Trina would glance around some wondering if there was a radio around. Not seeing one she sigh. She wishes she was like any other seventeen year old who could listen to her radio or even a ipod so that her studies would go by so much quicker. But no she had to short out anything electric. So moving to sit up on the couch with the book within her lap she try to get back to studying.
James couldnt help but smile, he certainly understood how she could feel. Wizards couldnt do anything fun when it came to electronics. one time, James entered a best buy, and the store nearly caught on fire. It was rough."While, I agree with you... the hotel could also be a very good place to work on your fine control. What with the threat of blowing out the entire hotel being a good incentive to not lose it."
he leaned back in his chair then, musing over a few things. leaned his head over onto a palm, propped up on his elbow."Y'know, I think I might have an idea... if you're willing to place a bit more trust in me... I may have a place that could withstand your best shot. I could make it availible for you to practice in , without fear of breaking anything."
This store, was James' Sanctum Sanctorium, it was the seat of his power, it was a made up word he got from a comic book. but he felt it worked well enough. and downstairs he had turned the basement into a sort of magic box, an all purpose room to keep things from getting in, or getting out, a bomb shelter and or prison cell all in one. but it was secure.
Once again her features twisted in a grimace at the thought of using the hotel to perfect her control. It was bad enough trying to seek out and feel all the electronics gadgets and do-dads in the building, but then trying to find the breaker box after she'd shorted it out? Not fun and not easy. She had a general idea of where the breaker box was now, at least, but she still didn't relish the idea of freaking everyone in the building out again.
Hand lifted, tunneling fingers through her hair, but she'd forgotten her sunglasses were perched up on her head, so they fell down behind her. With a grumble, she reached back for them and spun them about in her hand while thinking over his offer of a place to practice. There were reasons she didn't trust people easily, but having already let James in on her abilities she didn't think giving him a little more trust would bring about some sort of disaster.
"That sounds... promising." A moment of hesitation and then she flashed a lop-sided smile at him. "I was actually going to ask you, once I rent a house around here, if you could make one of those nifty circles in one of the rooms. Though, now that I think about it more, that probably wouldn't work well." A roll of her shoulders and she tapped her sunglasses against her thigh. "But... if you're sure I won't be interfering with anything you might need that place for, I'm willing to give it a try."
Head tilted, dark gaze studying his face for a moment. Once again she contemplated all the pros and cons of her next suggestion. But really, she wasn't in the mood to dance around James' apprentice every time she came here. "I think..." A deep breath and she firmed her resolve. "Maybe we could let Alastrina in on this? You know, if I keep coming around she'll eventually find out..." Katey left it at that, believing his judgement in this matter might be better than hers.
James watched her for a moment, watched her face, but never made eye contact. Wizards seldom did, it lead to odd things, that where hard to explain and even harder to prepare for.his expression was hard to read, but it was clear he was thinking. truth was he was calculating in his head. pondering the things that telling his apprentice, and after a moment he smiled and shook his head as if he was coming back from space or something.
"I don't see anything wrong with that, telling Trina... not making a circle, we couldn't do that right away. you need to be in a home for a little while, so it can attune to you. but once it does, I could help you out with that. how are you with wood carving?" he smiled again and stood, motioning her to join him with a smile."Come on, follow me." he started towards the back of the store, shouting as he walked
"Trina! Katey and I are going downstairs so that she can practice controlling electricity! Be a dear and mind the store would you? I'm going to allow you a reprieve from your studies!"
during all of that he reached the back door and stopped. "Downstairs, is sort of, my panic room... a magical bomb shelter." he paused and glanced at the door."No one, knows how to get into it... You've shown me a great measure of trust, and I'm offering you a return on that." he placed a hand on the neighboring book case and willed the first level of wards down. and then he placed both hands on the door before him. the wizard took a deep breath and channeled power through the metal of the door, which was suddenly filled with symbols of the arcane, lingering in green light.
"Come on down." he said with a nod, pulling the heavy door open, the outside was a modern fire door, but the other side was black wrought iron. which if she looked had many similar symbols carved into it as well. "Ignis" the single word brought like to oil lanterns that hung form the walls down the stairs and into the room below. he entered first, mostly because you didn't ask a woman to walk into a badly lit basement first. you also left the door open.
The room at the bottom of the stairs, was an absolute magical work of art. words inked into the stone walls in flowing verses, magical circles and mathematical formulae the ceiling and floor where mirrored magic circles, very elaborate and covering the majority of the space. in the corner was a large antique wardrobe, emergency supplies they where never knew how long you'd be stuck in here. "Here, give this room your best shot... trust, you can't hurt it. My mentor taught me how to make rooms like this. No one was better at defensive magic then he was, he literally wrote the book on protecting yourself from modern threats..." there was admiration in his tone as he spoke James was certainly proud of everything he had learned from his mentor.
Alastrina would be studying upstairs in the loft area. Not paying attention to anything else that was going on around her. When she gotten a yell from James as he yelled something about going to the basement to help Katey control her electricity and to mind the store while he did that. And that she didn't have to study while doing that which made her brow raise in surprise. Placing the book she had over on the pile before making her way down the stairs in the store.
Making her way over toward the counter jumping up to sit her rear on the counter top as she looked about the book store while her hand came up to twirl a strand of hair.
The news about being unable to make a circle came as a surprise. Of course, she wasn't any sort of mage so how was she to know that there needed to be some bit of your presence permeating a house. Brows lifted at the question of wood carving. "Honestly, I've never tried it." And what the hell did that have to do with anything? He wasn't expecting her to make carved pillars for her rented house, was he? Well, that was beside the point.
Heaving herself up out of the comfortable chair, she scooped up her notebook and followed after him. Surprise had her steps faltering and her jaw dropping. Honestly, when she'd decided that maybe they should let Alastrina in on things, she'd pictured sitting down and explaining the basics to the girl along with extracting a promise not to speak of it to anyone else. James' carefree shout to his apprentice, after the initial shock, had her shaking her head with a faint smile curling her lips upward. But, on the up side, at least her presence was letting Trina off the hook about studying.
Upon reaching the door, she rocked back on her heels, watching around his side. If she weren't so damn short, she'd have been looking over his shoulder, but that was besides the point. A brilliant smile flashed when he showed her nearly as much trust as she'd shown him. For some reason, she found the fact that the arcane symbols glowed green quite amusing. "Green for go?" A slight chuckle.
When he beckoned her after him, she paused to inspect the stairs and walls, checking to see if the door was likely to swing shut and trap her down here. She wasn't severely claustrophobic, but she didn't like the feeling of being trapped. It tended to set her nerves off and broke her control. But, it appeared all was going to be fine, so she wanded after him, the motorcycle boots making less noise on the stairs than might have been expected.
At the bottom of the stairs, that obsidian gaze ran over the wizardly symbols. None of the mathematical stuff made much sense to her, but if she wished she could read the verses on the walls. However, that wasn't what she was down here for. Attention turned to James, a brow lifting as he told her to give the room her best shot. Well, that might take a bit. Sure, she knew the theory of how to project the lightning into a ranged weapon, but doing it was another matter. Her strengths lay in merely tampering with electronics, but that was from years of practice.
With a slight shrug, she stood straight and closed her eyes to center her thoughts. When she believed she was ready to try this, her eyes opened and she pulled off her gloves, shoving them into a pocket. "Here goes nothing, I guess." Katey knew better than to doubt her ability to do this, but it was inevitable that some doubt should creep in. After all, this was not something she was familiar with. Flexing the fingers of her left hand, she focused on pushing the current to her hand, watching as little sparks began to float around it. That was a good sign. And so far the energy wasn't getting away from her as it had at the hotel, although her hair was floating and crackling with static.
Brows drew together in a frown as she eyed a spot on the floor, picturing in her mind the bolt of lightning that should hit when she sent the energy out. With a disappointed huff, she glared at the itty bitty spark that moved only a few inches away from her hand. Nothing for it but to try again. Unfortunately, the fewer good results she saw, the more her temper frayed. A vicious cycle. When her anger overwhelmed her, she didn't see results, but she sure as hell felt the pulse of electricity moving out from her. IF there had been any electronics in the room, and IF it hadn't been a magical bunker, she would likely have shorted out the bookstore and perhaps the buildings on either side.
With a guilty look over at James, she sank to the floor and glared at her hand as if that would make anything better. "This is ridiculous. I should be able to do this, shouldn't I?" She sounded only a little miffed, but she was truly puzzled why this was taking so long to learn when most things came easily. "I'm like a damn EMP when I get frustrated like this." And oh, was she glad that had never occured to Dr. Sinclair, or anyone else at the facility for that matter. There was no telling what they would have made her do if they'd know about it. "And why won't it move further away from me?" Head tilted to the side as she thought about it.
Unbidden came the thought that she might be holding on to that current, refusing to let it go far from her... As if she were afraid to be without it, without the protection it offered her. "No, that can't be it..." It was muttered more to herself than anything. Clearly, this was not going to be as easy as she'd originally thought.
He watched her while she worked. couched down on his hauncches, eyes watching her hands, and then up to her face." you and be both." being EMP's he meant, he was one as well, probably even worse then she was, at least she could keep a cell phone.
he stood up strait when she stopped and started towards his wardrobe." I have a thought..." he said while he was rumaging through his things. "Concrete isnt really conductive unless it's wet, and even then it'll be the water really does the conducting." he smiled when he turned around with a box of antique forged, rought nails. they where black iron and aged. with a smile the wizard shook the box as he started back towards her. tossing nails randomly around him as he did." My thought, if that you should try focusing on a conductor. something that could start an arc... oh! think of it like an arc welder. you can shoot energy through thd diode, but until you spark an arc, it will not proceed to flow and weld!" he looked excided and tossed a few nails around the room a single handful littering the ground.
knelt down beside her and glanced ahead at the room. leaning close." My Mentor taught me that. magic is seventyfive percent a mental process. your confidence rules your mind. and your mind rules you." he smiled over at her then." not to sound like Yoda, but don't try to do it... simply do it." he said pointing out to one of the closer nails." there, hit that one."
Obsidian eyes tracked him as he moved toward a wardrobe, head tilted to the side as she listened. Well, of course she knew what was conductive and what wasn't, but what did that have to do with...? Oh. She watched the nails as they bounced on the floor and then settled. When he returned to kneel beside her and mentioned what his mentor had said about confidence, she made a face. Clearly, she'd heard the same thing a hundred times before.
Still, with a little shrug, she extended her left hand toward the nail he'd indicated. Now, Katey knew perfectly well that if she didn't force the current back that sparks would move from her to any metal object nearby. But that nail was further away than the few inches she had experience with. Brows drew together, focusing on sending the current away from her to touch that nail.
The energy built, a static charge around her lifting strands of hair, then pop. Sparks jumped toward the blackened iron, but did not quite reach it before they fizzled out. It was, however, progress. "Come on, hit the damn thing," was muttered under her breath as she tried again. To say that Katey had very little patience was an understatement. She liked her results quick.
If she frowned any harder, her brows were going to freeze mashed together. With another shove of her will, she managed to send a thin, brief arc that actually touched the nail this time. "Ha!" In triumph she looked over at him, then reached up to rub at the middle of her forehead. "Ow. Concentrating hurts sometimes."
"Anything worth doing usually does Katey." James said offering her agreat big smile, standing up and taking a few steps away and giving the closest nail a little kick further away. "It'll get easier the more you do it. when I first learned Shields, I was sore head to foot for a week..." he paused as he moved tor eturn to her side and knelt down again." Granted, my mentor used to throw stones at me, until I got it."
He smiled then."fortunately for you and Alastrina, I'm not a stone thrower." he glanced out at the nails on the ground again."Do you think you might be ready for another Go? S'a bit further away thsi time... might be a little more difficult." He wa patient and his tone was soft. James really really liked teaching. it was something he was good at, and reading wasnt a detriment to him in his teaching, hell it was even mroe helpful.
She could have argued with that. Rather, she could have used her twin's words to refute that statement, but she was certainly not Chloe. Why should she use arguments that she wasn't at all sure were even true? So, she ignored it to watch him kick the nail further away.
"He threw stones? That seems a little harsh." A shake of her head with a slight smile in place. Oh, she could picture some old guy chucking stones at a young James, probably scowling and yelling at him when they made contact. His next words had her laughing, even if it was a little darkly. "Fortunate for you, you mean. If you threw rocks at me, I'd be tempted to throw them back." And she probably would, too. Katey wasn't a very sweet person sometimes.
At the question of whether she was ready to try again, she paused, seriously assessing her condition. A moment later and she nodded slightly. "I think so. I mean, the more I try this the sooner my mind will admit that it can be done, right?" She didn't actually wait for his answer, reaching out her left hand toward the nail.
It wasn't easy, far from it, but it wasn't quite as difficult as the first time. True it took several attempts before anything like the previous attempt came about, and this time it only touched the nail for a few seconds. But it was a success if you wanted to call it that.
But, this was work. And if she was going to do work, the leather jacket had to go. Shrugging out of the jacket, she flung it across the room where it slid into that wardrobe James had retrieved the nails from. Without another word, she made the attempt again. The arc lasted several more seconds than the last, but it was only by her stubborness that it did so. The effort made her sway, shoulder bumping his where she rested for a few moments. Luckily, she moved the current away from that point of contact so that she wouldn't hurt him.
"Pain is an excellent motivational tool. He'd always say. 'The faster you shiled yourself the sooner it will stop.'" the wizard shook his head then and smiled. a grin at her." But that wouldnt get you vyer far, I'd be able to stop them."that grin remained on his face when her attention returned to her trying to get to the nails.
"Exactly." he offered in return when she moved to try again. and he was quiet until the light show was finished and she leaned against hi, he draped an arma round her. if she didnt move that current away, he would get shocked when he did, resulting in a tensing of his arm, life grew to his tattoos then, and his arm loosened again, giving her a supporting squeeze, allowing her the stability of his body." Very good Katey...Let's take a break on that one for now." he gave her another squeeze before smiling again. " We can take a few breathers, and I can share with you. what I believe you might also be able to do with your abilities."
He'd been thinking about it alot. Elementalist's where different then wizards by a large margin, but they often did not have the training of a wizard either. Katey was amazing, and in his mind, she could do some absolutely incredible stuff with the ability she had, given the proper training.
Despite the slight pain in her head, she still remembered to move the current away from her back and shoulders before he got more than a minor jolt. That didn't stop her from tensing for a minute. It wasn't that she objected to him touching her. No, it was the fact that she still wasn't used to anyone other than her sister being willing to touch her. A slight smile was offered to him after that last squeeze, straightening up and then stretching forward over her crossed legs.
"Good idea." It was a little muffled with her face so close to the floor, but now her back and shoulders felt better with the kinks out of them. When she sat back up, she scooted around so that she was facing him. "All right, what have you come up with?" A pause, head tilting to the side. Before he could answer her another question was fired off. "Do you happen to have tea around here somewhere?" She really wished she had access to the cabinet over the stove at her apartment in New York, the shelf devoted to her stash of chamomile tea, but she'd settle for anything. Tea helped ease headaches and she'd like to stop the minor one she had from getting any worse if at all possible.
"Of course I do... I'm English." he offered with a pleasant smile. starting back towards the wardrobe. once again flinging the door open. while he rummaged through. grabbing a few things. he spoke. "Well, Wizards are really the most versatile of magic wielding folk... it's said that we are because of how we're trained... and we're trained to use the world around us, to do alot of the work for us..." he offered. he had a kettle in his hand and a small gas burger, with a propane tank. it was simple enough technology he could use it. slung under the other arm was a gallon of water and a box of loose tea (English breakfast) he smiled and took a seat before her. folding his legs just as she did. speaking as he set up the burner." Physics... s our friend and ally. always remember that. there are fundamental laws that govern our universe... yes it's possible to break them, but, they're much easier to bend... Take this for example."
James paused and snapped his fingers. bringing fire to the burner. without the gas being on" as you can see, the gas is off and still there is fire... but..." he gave a wave of his hand, to fan the flames out. he turned on the gas and sparked to life some flames. these ones blue and small."If I use the fuel present, as well as the flame. then." he snapped his fingers again and the flames leaped up standing a few inches taller. he turned off the gas again and set the kettle on the burner and turned it back on again, leaning back onto his palms while the water heated." Katey. I believe that with the proper training and knowledge of the laws that govern our universe, you could be capable of ... well. anything. Hell, even so far as to charging the polarity of the metal around you. to act as a magnet.... imagine being able to match a bullet to your own electromagnetic field..."
James reached over in an ungraceful move and grabbed two nails. and clenched a fist around each tightly for a moment, ligth danced inside of his clenched fist for a moment and he opened his palms." this one is you, having tuned your body... " he held up the other." this is a bullet..." he flicked one at the other and the flicked nail veered away, and clattered to the ground. and he smiled big and bright." and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Of course, It's all theory... but theoretically... I think It's possible" he gave a smile that was a proud one, he spoke very fast in all of that, hopefully she followed him well enough.
Ask a silly question. Amusement flickered for a moment in the dark gaze that followed his movements. One leg stretched carefully to the side, avoiding hitting the tea things as she rotated her foot. Soon enough it was pulled back beneath her and the same treatment given to the other leg. Watching the example with the burner was interesting and gave her a little something else to think about.
An elbow came to rest on her knee, chin resting on her curled fingers. A brow lifted at the possibility of avoiding a bullet. With this new example of his, a smile grew slowly on her lips. Now, this might come in handy. IF she could pull it off. There was no telling whether someone might take a shot at her while she was working in her less-than-legal profession.
"I like the way your mind works, James. That could be exceedingly useful." One finger uncurled to tap at her lips while she thought. "I was more concerned with controlling the most obvious manifestations of my power. Of course, at the time, I didn't particularly want these abilities." A quick quirk of her lips. "I suppose I closed my mind to any other ways to use it."
A soft chuckle issued forth as she peered across at him. "I'm beginning to think going to that masquerade ball was a good thing."
"my mind works wonders sometimes... sometimes when I'm not awake... but I forgive it that little lapse most times." he smiled up at her from the tea kettle. he glanced about the area he'd chosen to sit down on." We're trained to think outside of the box in most things." the wizard stood and made his way to the wardrobe again, pulling from it a small little mesh ball and two cups "hard to have tea without cups." and the tea ball. those in hands he took his seat once again.
"I can certainly relate with that sentiment. We wizards have been trying for decades how to counteract the effects our magic has on electronics. Hard to blend in with a world of technology when your mere presence causes them to malfunction." he gave a shrug, watching the flames. feeding magic into it, bringing the nice orange flame to a blue. glancing up at Katey again smiling a broad smile up at her.
"Yeah, me too... I'd just be an odd fellow preparing tea alone in his basement if not for it." his tone was joking. but in all seriousness his words where true. but then again, he probably wouldn't be making tea in his basement if he where alone.
